Malaysia is one of the world's major palm oil producers, and buyers around the world source palm oil products from Malaysian refiners and traders. Here is what to settle before you order.
Know which product you need
Palm oil comes in many forms: crude palm oil, refined, bleached and deodorised palm oil, palm olein and stearin, palm kernel oil and a range of derivatives. Each has its own specification, so name the exact product and grade you want rather than asking for palm oil in general.
Specifications to agree
- Quality parameters such as free fatty acid content, moisture and impurities, and colour where relevant
- Packing: bulk tanker, flexitank, ISO tank or drums, depending on volume
- Quantity, delivery window and loading port
- Inspection and testing, and who pays for them
Sustainability certification
Many buyers require proof of responsible sourcing. In Malaysia, the national scheme is MSPO (Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil), and some buyers also ask for RSPO certification. Confirm which your customers require and ask the supplier for the relevant certificate and supply chain documents.
Pricing and contracts
Palm oil prices move with the market, so contracts usually state how the price is fixed and when. Agree the price basis, the Incoterm and the payment terms in writing. Our guide to EXW, FCA and FOB explains how to compare offers on the same basis.
Shipping and documents
Expect a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and a quality or inspection certificate. Check your own country's import rules and any duty or quota arrangements before you commit.
Verify the seller
Commodity deals involve large amounts, which makes fraud more costly. Run every new supplier through our verification checklist, and consider independent inspection at the loading port.
